My mother has decided she's done with her ancient Toyota and wants something with a bit of character so she's fallen in love with a 2017 Mini Countryman Cooper S that she spotted near Al Wasl and now I've been nominated as the family car guy to go check it out and make sure she's not buying a headache wrapped in British Racing Green. She doesn't care about horsepower or handling she just likes the round headlights and the fact that it's easy to park near her favorite supermarket but I'm the one who remembers every story about the Prince engine timing chain tensioners failing and the thermostat housings cracking and the high pressure fuel pumps giving up the ghost right when you least expect it. I took it for a quick spin yesterday and it felt peppy enough and the AC was cold but I noticed the idle was a tiny bit lumpy when we stopped at a light and the owner said it just needed an Italian tune up which didn't exactly fill me with confidence. I'm thinking I might just book a proper Dubai Mini Cooper Pre Purchase Check for her before she commits because I'd rather be the boring son who made her wait an extra day than the one who recommended a car that leaves her stranded on the Palm with a check engine light and an expensive tow truck bill. Anyone on here actually daily driving one of these in our lovely summer heat and can tell me if the cooling system actually holds up or if I should gently steer her back towards something Japanese?
